Detoxification of the body has been around for centuries, as far back as Ancient Egypt. Body detox or body cleansing became popular in recent centuries during the 19the century, but fell out of favor in the early 20th century. Detoxification, ridding the body of toxins, is a treatment in alternative medicine, and abandoned my mainstream medicine.
Today, body cleansing, body detox, seems to be the trend. You see infomercials on every channel, about all kinds of body detox systems and a myriad of detox diets. Nevertheless, mainstream medicine practitioners view detoxification as unscientific. There are various types of cleansing, or body detoxifications, such as colon cleansing, colonics, to detox diets--avoiding specific foods, and dietary supplements, and herbs and juices--even soups. One such detox diet that has been used by many, is known as the Master Cleanse, or the lemonade diet, by Stanley Burroughs.
Detox diets claims can include everything from increasing your intake of water, which flushes out the poisons in our bodies, to eliminating alcohol and processed foods, and ingesting more fruits and vegetables. Even with the onslaught of body detox systems and detox diets, everywhere you go, (grocery stores, health food stores, pharmacies, the media and in print, there are many Scientists, dieticians and doctors, who, on the overall, more often than not, dispute the value of body detox and detox diets as a means to cleanse the body and organs of toxins while generally judging detox diets and body detox as 'harmless' because there is no 'factual evidence.' On the other hand, body detox and detox diets have resulted in great success with people who need to withdraw from dependence on a habituating drug. Detox diets, such as water fasting or the lemonade diet, may not be safe. If improperly followed or for too long a time, may well result in nutritional deficiencies due to lack of protein.
For many years during the late '60s and '70s, I used colonics to detoxify my body, drinking lots of water. I also used a detox diet of eating more fruits and vegetables and moderate exercise. These changes can often produce beneficial effects in and of themselves, and it is accordingly difficult to separate these effects from those caused by the more controversial detoxification recommendations. Not only did my body feel clean and pure, it also helped me spiritually and emotionally. Not only did I feel clean, my thoughts were clearer and rid of toxic thoughts and ideas.
